Dutch Oven Cobbler

"I like cooking the Dutch oven cobbler when I'm out with my wife or friends camping. It's the perfect treat to enjoy by a campfire."
-Jim Katherman

2 medium-sized cans of pie filling, (apple, peach, cherry or berry)
1 box of yellow or white cake mix
Butter or margarine

  1. Grease the bottom of Dutch oven with butter and pour cans of pie filling into the greased Dutch oven.
  2. Sprinkle dry cake mix evenly on top of the fruit and pie filling.
  3. Add butter or margarine randomly across the surface of cake mix and cover with lid.
  4. Carefully lift the Dutch oven using the wire handle and lower it onto a bed of hot coals. Let cook between 25-35 minutes.
  5. Using gloves and tongs, lift about 8-12 hot coals onto the lid of the Dutch oven and spread across evenly. Let cook between 25-35 minutes.
  6. Remove coals with gloves and tongs after about 30 minutes. Lift lid and serve.

Jeff's drink suggestion: "Jim is no stranger to outdoor cooking. Spiced apple cider works well with this dish. Use the Dutch oven for both recipes."

Spiced Apple Cider

1/2 gallon apple cider
1 cup orange juice
2 fresh cinnamon sticks
1 cup cranberry juice
1/2 cup brown sugar

Put all ingredients in Dutch oven pot. Heat on the stove and serve.
